Bespoke Ring Commission - Elaine’s Grandmother’s Ring Remodelling

I have always been interested in an object’s capacity to hold history, to accumulate meaning, 
Objects connection to ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Jewellery is often bought to celebrate life, to remember loved ones.
It consists of layers of connections, micro memories, elements that form part of the texture of our everyday life.

Elaine’s story is truly personal and beautiful.
My kind of commission.

Elaine had been visiting Praktyka (my home, as well as an art eco retreat I have created with love with my husband) for a few years now.

Last autumn she brought with her her precious grandmother’s rings, with an idea of remodelling them into a ring for herself.
We sat in my studio, looking at my work, dreaming out the ring she would love.

Elaine tried various rings.
We discussed design, weight, organic shape of the rings, and what we could create together.

She was visiting with her husband and granddaughter for a few days, so the following day they went out for a walk to collect treasures for me to use in the process of designing the ring.

That part felt really important.

Because we weren’t only working with her grandmother’s rings —
with those heirloom diamonds and that history —
we were also bringing in Elaine’s own story.

Her time with her family.
Those shared moments.
Collecting shells, stones… being together.

A connection across generations.
Past and present meeting in one object.

Something to carry forward.

The final ring is very special.
I fell in love with the weight of it.
The textures — shaped by the objects Elaine collected with her family on the beach.
The diamonds were cast in place and turned out beautifully.

Each time I’m approached for a bespoke commission, I feel privileged to become part of your story.
For the trust I’m given in creating something with such precious meaning.
It moves me every time.
