Bespoke Promise Ring Commission – Sheila's Story | Handmade in Devon

David and Sheila came to my studio with a beautiful intention. A ring for Sheila. A promise. A commitment. A ring made to mark their relationship intentions. Express love. Commitment. Journey together.

It was a surprise. Sheila had no idea what the day held for her. She was slightly worried she was going to bungee jump, she shyly joked.

We sat together and talked. About her. What she's drawn to. What moves her. The colours, the textures, the shapes that feel like her. Sheila was drawn to the organic textures of heavyweight gold Sand Ring. 

So that became our starting point. Organic texture. Sculptural form combined with earth toned champagne, brown, yellow, warm peachy diamonds, both rose cut and brilliant cut, in beautiful tonal shades. 

The end ring is heavy textured, handmade from start to finish, organic, tactile and one of a kind. 

I have always been interested in an object's capacity to do something deeper. Something more meaningful.

An object's capacity to transform into symbols. Transcend into something deeply personal. Their surfaces and details tangled into the complex web of a human life. A human story.

Gaston Bachelard wrote about poetic daydreaming, an active, creative waking dream that allows us to inhabit the world with intensity. To reach these dreamlike states we must engage with meaningful objects, intimate spaces, things that hold our memories and imagination, that have the capacity to transcend us, to carry us back to feelings, to people, to places.

I feel moved to create a promise ring for Sheila. A piece of her intimate, interconnected, woven web of daydream world. Made just for her to wear every day, her own bespoke commitment ring.
